King of Fighters 95

Women's Team

Well, the name's more accurate this time.

Story

Rugal Post-Stage 3

My translation Official translation
Secretary: Lord Rugal... The team of King, Shiranui Mai, and Yuri Sakazaki has won four rounds so far. Secretary: Monsieur Rugal. King, Mai, and Yuri won 4 matches!
Rugal: Heheheh....those strong-willed young women, hm? I'll use them to decorate my living room after being stuffed. Hahahahaha! Rugal: Heh, heh. They'll make fine decoration for my living room! Hah, hah, hah!

Vice's standard line here. One thing to note is that Mai's name is family name first, while Yuri's is given name first. This is presumably because Mai is from Japan while Yuri was born and raised in America. It's a neat detail that's dropped in English, presumably for character limits.

Then Rugal calls back to the previous game by talking about how he's going to have the team taxidermied after winning. This time he specifies that they're going in his living room, as opposed to with the rest of his collection. Though thinking about it, he must've lost the collection when the Black Noah went down, right...?

Either way, he drops that he's going to have them stuffed in English, but still plans to have them decorate his living room. He also doesn't call them "strong-willed young women" (not the same phrase as "energetic young ladies"), but that's okay, it sounded off anyway.

It's weird to think about Rugal having a living room. Can you imagine Adelheid and Rose dealing with their dad's taste in interior decor?

This loses one screen in English, as usual.

Rugal Post-Stage 6

Since this is the same for all characters, it's on the boss page

Before Saisyu

My translation Official translation
Mai: Wh-what? What's going on? Mai: Hey, it's beauty mist!
Yuri: Gas! But...why... Yuri: It's gas, bimbo!
King: Damn, it's a trap! C-crap... King: A trap? Again?
Yuri: Ugh, where... Yuri: Where are we?
Rugal: Good morning, ladies. Rugal: Pretty, even in the morning.
King: Rugal?! So you're alive? King: Rugal! You're alive!
Rugal: Heheheheh, I'm immortal. I'm afraid it's rather short notice, but soon you shall die. It's my present to you after you ruined my wonderful hobby, and made me taste the humiliation of defeat! Rugal: Perceptive as always! But you must die! A just dessert for hindering my evil plans!
Mai: You want us to punish you that much? H~m. I didn't realise you were such a masochist! Mai: Don't ya think that's too much. I mean, death?
Rugal: Hahahahah! You say some funny things, girl! You must wish to die by my hand. But I'm afraid you must face him first. Rugal: Charming, to the last. I wish I could do it myself.
Saisyu: Heheheh.... It's an honor to meet you. My name is Kusanagi Saisyu. Will you give me the pleasure of a match? Saishu: Saishu Kusanagi is the name. Let's engage in full contact.
Yuri: Kusanagi? Kyo's...? No way! Yuri: Hey, do you know Kyo?
Mai: Brainwashing?! F-for real? Mai: Wow, he looks brainwashed-- or just stupid!
King: Tch, what a dirty trick, Rugal! King: Rugal, you beast!
Rugal: Hahahahah! Your curses have such a pleasant sound. Just as I promised before, I'll have you stuffed and mounted after your deaths! Well then, have at it! Rugal: "Beast?" I like the ring to that. Your mine, Kingy. Kiss, kiss.

Hoo boy. The editor had a ball with this one.

So right off the bat we have a goofy joke with Mai and Yuri that's not there in Japanese. I'm pretty sure "beauty mist" is not and has never been a thing, but sure. It makes Yuri sound pretty harsh toward her teammate too.

English King's "Again?" is interesting because it's not in the Japanese. I guess it's a reference back to the previous game, which is funny as most of those were dropped in English. Well, here one got added in.

Rugal's first line is the standard one he's been using for every team, just with "ladies" instead of "gentlemen". And as usual, it's changed in English. This time, he's saying that the team is beautiful right out of bed. Well, it fits the context, but it's going a bit further than the Japanese did. In general, English Rugal is hornier than Japanese Rugal.

His second is fairly standard. The English is close to the Art of Fighting Team's version, but the Japanese is the same as the Psycho Soldier Team's. Maybe some copy-paste confusion?

Mai's reply is completely changed. Wow. She goes from semi-seriously calling Rugal a masochist to protesting the threat. There's no relation between the lines. From this and EX Billy in Real Bout Special, SNK seems to have wanted to cut down on masochism in the English versions. Too sexy for America?

Rugal's line is wildly cut down, to the point where it doesn't make a lot of sense. "Charming" as a reply to English Mai's line is a bit off, and he's much less specific about introducing Saishu. I guess the meaning gets across, but it's much less flavorful.

Saisyu's line is the same as always. Saishu...hey, did you know that Mai (and Yuri and King) are attractive women? SNK wants you to know!

Yuri's line is again changed. In Japanese, it's the usual "oh, he must be Kyo's dad", but in English she has to ask. It makes her sound a bit more ditzy in English.

Then Mai's line...is just completely rewritten, again. At least the concept of brainwashing came across! ...but man, Mai, harsh.

I'll allow King's line. It's fine. Everything's fine.

And then Rugal's final line is completely changed. The callback to KoF94 is once again dropped, and so is Rugal introducing the fight against Saishu. Instead he hits on King. ...sure, whatever. He already took Reppuken from Geese, he can take awkwardly hitting on King too.

This loses five screens in English: one from Rugal's first line, one from Mai's "masochist" line, two from Rugal's reply and the usual one from Saisyu.

Before Rugal

My translation Official translation
Saisyu: Heh...well done. Now, at last, I whose disgraced name was made known, can... Saishu: My fate was to lose. I'm impressed.
Rugal: Hahahahaha! Even though I am your enemy, I must congratulate you on a job well done. But you cannot defeat me, not with the new power I have obtained! Uohhhhhhhh... Rugal: Heh, heh. You did well. But now, face evil's wrath, tootsies! Woooooo......

Saisyu's line is the standard.

Rugal's is the same in Japanese as it is for most of the teams. The English is almost the same as for the Art of Fighting Team, except this adds "tootsies!" Because Women's Team.

This loses the usual two screens in English, one from Saisyu and one from Rugal.

Ending

My translation Official translation
Rugal: Gh, so even with this power, I still lost...! Rugal: Even with my new power, I lost.
Rugal ?!....What? My body is....! Rugal: What? My body.....?????
Rugal: Ridiculous...that this should happen to me....
Rugal: Heheh...very well. As long as this world has need of me, I shall surely be resurrected... Rugal: No...to meet such a fate! But I'll be back...you jerks!
Rugal: Farewell, ladies...
Mai: What in the world just happened? Mai: What just went on here?
King: Probably...Rugal was unable to withstand the energy after it began to run wild... But...what was that evil shadow at the end? King: The power was too much. Whose evil shadow was that?
Yuri: I dunno... Well, we all got out okay. And we won the tournament to boot. So it's all good! Yuri: Well, everyone's all right, and we won. We can live with that, right?
Mai: Yeah, that's the spirit! Let's go have a big bash to celebrate! Mai: Yeah, that's right. Let's party hearty!
King: ....that's right! Okay, let's head back to the bar and have a blast! King: Yeah. Back to the club. And drinks on the house!
Mai, Yuri: Woo-hoo! Mai,Yuri: Yeah!
Mai: Aaaaah, Andy! Mai: Hey, Andy!
Yuri: Serves you right, Ryo~~~!
Mai, Yuri: Ahahahahahahahaha! Mai,Yuri: Kyaaaah!
King: sigh...Really, those two... They're such a headache... King: Next time, new partners.

Rugal exploding is mostly similar to other routes, and in English it's identical. But in Japanese he specifically adds a "ladies" to his farewell. Because Women's Team.

Actually, given the craziness of the scene before Saishu, I'm surprised it was the same in English. I'm guessing the tyranny of copy-paste strikes again.

Mai's first line is basically the same. King's is the usual wildly cut down explanation, to the point where it doesn't make a lot of sense. There's a bunch of details lost in translation, but they're all ones that have been lost before. SNK just didn't want the English version hinting at Orochi early, I guess.

Yuri's line is basically the same, just a bit terser.

I really like Mai's "[l]et's party hearty!" That's good phrasing right there.

Japanese King doesn't promise drinks on the house. Cold!

The rest is pretty close, but for whatever reason, Yuri's line is just plain gone. In this case I'd suspect control code problems somehow, because there's no obvious reason to cut it. It's just not there in English.

King is harsher in English. She's sick of these goofballs, but she's not ready to drop them yet.

In general, the ending is pretty close to the Japanese. It's a big change from the scene before the Saishu fight.

This loses eight screens in English. The standard two from Rugal, two from King's explanation, one from Yuri cheering everyone up, one from Mai agreeing, one from King agreeing, and Yuri's totally cut line.

Ahhhhhh, geez! You're soooooooooo weak! And I was looking forward to this too! Why are you such a weenie? I was hoping for a workout!
Oh, how can I be so strong? I knew all along that I must be some kind of genius! Tee hee. Why am I so strong? Talent, just pure talent.
Oh, for crying out loud! If you don't think about what kind of team you're making, of course you'll lose! Oh, fudge! Over so soon? I'll never lose those extra pounds!

Two of these are basically the same. "Weenie" is a cute way of getting the flavor of Yuri in Japanese across in English, but it doesn't really stand out since SNK used it so much. Then her second line is a lot less cutesy in English. She just sounds plain confident instead of half joking.

Then the third line is totally different. It is kind of meta in Japanese, but that's no reason to change it. I guess the editor just really wanted to make that joke.

Hero Team Listen, you guys! Just because you got popular doesn't mean you can let your guard down!
AoF Team This means I'm a kyokyugen master! Right, everyone?
FF Team Whooaa, impressive! But it looks like you couldn't show off your full ability this time!
Ikari Team You're the same as always, soldiers! Come on, cheer up already!
PS Team You went all-out! Psychic powers are pretty great, aren't they?
Kim Team Justice, huh? Are you really a justice team? I don't see it at all!
Women Team If you can't beat the real me, you'll never earn the right to say you use kyokyugen!
Rival Team You know, you've gotta have some bright spots in your lives, even if you're all twisted!

These are all pretty cute. I like the callback to KoF94 in the Ikari Team's line, and Yuri lording it over her family is funny. The line against Kim Team is pretty harsh, though. Man, Yuri, Kim's doing his best.

The Rival Team's line is a bit confusing, but neither Kishi nor I could figure out a better way to handle it. I guess she's trying to cheer them up too? It would be in-character.

You thought that since your opponent was a woman you could take it easy, right? Another blow for ninja ladyhood has been struck today. Banzai!
Once you fall prey to ninja tricks it's all over! My victory was assured! Trapped in my spell of beauty, another peasant bites the dust!
It's important to believe in your own strength, but you can't back up that belief at all! I thought you were stronger than that. Bummer city!

I had to guess which line went with which for the first two. I think I'm right, but I'm not going to make any promises if someone opens up the code.

The first line is...not all that related. The Japanese line feels a bit similar to Mai's old Fatal Fury Special lines, but it's not a direct reference. (and it's an easy place to go for the Women's Team in general) The English is kind of weird, but at least it's distinctive.

The second line is about ninja tricks in Japanese, but becomes about Mai's looks in English. Uh, okay. And a Queen reference, for good measure.

The third line is pretty funny in Japanese. It's somewhat less so in English, but "[b]ummer city!" goes a long, long way.

Hero Team There's just no way you could win against us! No way! Go train some more already!
AoF Team This is all you can do with kyokyugen karate? Ninjutsu is so much more useful!
FF Team I know I said I wanted to be part of this team, but there's no way I'll deign to join you now!
Ikari Team The most cutting edge weaponry is nothing but junk against me! Do you understand that?
PS Team Your techniques are a little like ninjutsu, aren't they? But my style is just a skosh better, you know!
Kim Team Wow, Kim, you're doing a great job taking care of those two! Keep it up!
Women Team You wanted to take our place with that kind of strength and that level of beauty? Oh for-!
Rival Team You act real tough, but it turns out you're just a bunch of babies! O-hohohohoho!

Damn, that line against the Fatal Fury team. Funny, though.

Women, once again, are the final weapon.

Mai is considerably more supportive to Kim than Yuri is.

There's probably a better way to phrase the Women's Team line, but mine gets all the parts across.

I just like the Rival Team's line.

Let's call it here for today. If you're that green, you'll just get hurt! Okay, let's call it a day before you're seriously hurt!
If you want to fight me as an equal, then you need more experience! Hit the showers, stud. I'm am woman, hear me roar! Uaaah!
You underestimated me because I'm a woman? That's all the more reason for me to not lose! So you won't be saying "babe" anytime soon, right, beefcake?

The first line is basically the same, though the Japanese has a bit of nuance that King's opponent is a newbie. This is dropped in English.

The second line...doesn't have a lot to do with the translation, but it seemed to fit better than the third line. It is an all-star set of SNK phrases, though, with "hit the showers" and I am woman... together in one line. She's even got a roar. ...and a goofy grammar error, but you know. It happens.

The third line takes a fairly generic Japanese line and spices it up with some SNK language, but I can't really complain. Honestly, I like it.

Hero Team You're not done training yet, but you've got some good techniques! Too bad.
AoF Team The invincible dragon, the strongest tiger, the man who taught them both kyokyugen, and that's all you have?! Pathetic!
FF Team Your fans must be so disappointed! Sorry!
Ikari Team There! You'll give up this silly mercenary business now, right?
PS Team History is something you create on your own. Come back stronger next time!
Kim Team Tch, you're not worth my time! At that level, of course you'll lose!
Women Team There's no need to get serious for a fake, after all!
Rival Team For better or for worse, that's the way it happened! Get stronger and try again!

Kishi helped with the Psycho Soldier Team line

Technically King calls Takuma "the kyokugen instructor" here, but that didn't sound all that good after Ryo and Robert's fancier titles. Point is, she's dissing them for losing.

Once again, there's a callback to KoF94 for the Ikari Team. I like all these callbacks, makes it really feel like the characters have met before.

The rest of these are kind of dull, but them's the breaks.
