Story

Rugal Post-Stage 3

My translation Official translation
Secretary: Lord Rugal... The team of Ryo, Robert, and Takuma has won four rounds so far. Secretary: Monsieur Rugal. Ryo, Robert, and Takuma won 4 matches!
Rugal: The kyokugen karate group, hm? Heheh...this day will forevermore be known as the day kyokugen karate ended. Hahahahaha! Rugal: Kyokugen karate, huh. Too bad it ends today! Hah, hah, hah!

Vice drops last names for this group. Other than that, it's a very similar line to the Hero Team's.

Rugal says that the AoF Team is 極限流空手一同, or "kyokugen-style karate all members" (hyper literally translated). I'm interpreting it to mean that everyone in the AoF Team uses kyokugen, but it could also mean everyone that uses kyokugen is in the group...which would track with Rugal planning to end it via killing them all, but doesn't track with Yuri being off in the Women's Team.

The English drops it and just has him talk about kyokugen karate in general. It also drops how the end of kyokugen karate will be memorialized in favor of just saying that it will end today.

This scene loses one screen in English.

Rugal Post-Stage 6

Since this is the same for all characters, it's on the boss page

Before Saisyu

My translation Official translation
Robert: Wh-what? Robert: What the...?
Ryo: What...? Gas?! Ryo: It's gas, samurai-head!
Takuma: D-damn! That I should fall for this... Takuma: Nuts! To be trapped like...
Ryo: Ugh, where...? Ryo: What in heavens?
Rugal: Good morning, gentlemen. Rugal: Welcome back, my friends. Sleep well?
Takuma: Rugal! You're alive?! Takuma: Rugal! You're alive!
Rugal: Heheheh...I'm immortal. I'm afraid it's rather short notice, but your executions are be carried out right away. The charge? Ruining my wonderful hobby, and making me taste the humiliation of defeat! Rugal: Perceptive as always. Of course! But you must die! A just dessert for hindering my evil plans!
Robert: Oh-ho, it seems you must really like eating kyokugen karate techniques! Robert: Face kyokegen karate's power, garlic breath!
Rugal: Hahahaha! Of course, I look forward to being treated to a full course! But I'm afraid you must fight him first. Rugal: Well, you're in for a full course! Meet the appetizer!
Saisyu: Heheheh... It's been a long time, Takuma. Saishu: We meet again, Takuma!
Takuma: Why, you're Kusanagi Saisyu! What are you doing in a place like this? Takuma: Saishu Kusanagi! How?
Saisyu: I have been reborn by Lord Rugal's hand. And in addition, I have obtained new power. It could be called the strongest power in the Kusanagi's 1800-year history. Saishu: Resurrection! Be warned! Kusanagi power fills me!
Takuma: Saisyu... Rugal! What have you done to him, you fiend?! Takuma: Rugal, you fiend. Snap out of it Kusanagi!
Rugal: Hahahahaha! Well? Aren't you going to celebrate your reunion? Please, enjoy it to your heart's content! Rugal: Hah, hah! A touching reunion. Get on with the battle!

The editor got to this one.

"Samurai-head" is a powerful SNK insult, but it makes Ryo sound pretty harsh towards Robert. He's just as surprised as his pal in Japanese.

Takuma's line was awkward for me. In Japanese, he's expressing consternation that this should happen to him, of all people. I suppose since as a martial arts master he should've been able to sense treachery, or somehow avoided this fate. It's a bit more generic in English, but there's a similar idea. "Nuts!" is also supremely SNK.

Rugal's line is extended in English in a way I find charming.

Rugal's explanation for how he came back is new for the AoF Team, but the rest of the line is identical to the Hero Team's. There's a similar split between lines in English, which is interesting. The split between lines does end up awkward in English, because "Perceptive as always" is one screen and "Of course! But you must die!" is another, when it really feels like the "Of course!" should be on the previous screen.

Robert's line is slightly different in English, dropping the idea that Robert is making fun of Rugal by saying he must really like getting his ass kicked by kyokugen.

Rugal's next line ends up kind of confused in English. In Japanese, he plays off Robert's line and talks about how much he would like to fight kyokugen karate, but says they have to fight "him" first. In English, it sounds more like he's threatening to breathe on them. But then the English does something cute and introduces Saisyu as "the appetizer", which both confuses the metaphor and is kind of clever.

One thing to note about Saisyu and Takuma is that in Japanese, they refer to each other by first name, but with 殿/dono at the end. Dono is a relatively formal honorific and usually translates to Mr./Mrs., but I could not figure out a way to handle it that didn't sound really awkward in English. Point is, the dads know each other.

Takuma's line is extremely shortened, but I think the idea is still there.

Saisyu's first sentence is identical to the Hero Team's, but then goes off on its own. We do get a bit more detail about Saisyu's power-up, with him claiming he now has the strongest power of any Kusanagi. This is dropped in English for a few very brief, borderline broken, sentences. In fact, the English makes it sound like his power is that of the Kusanagis, when it's anything but.

The English now has Takuma calls Saisyu by his last name, which takes up a bunch of room but does make it sound like Takuma knows Saisyu and is fairly respectful towards him.

Finally, Rugal is all about bringing people back together in Japanese, but this is partially dropped in English. He's downright impatient there.

This scene loses two screens in English: one from Takuma's last line, and one from Rugal's last line.

Before Rugal

My translation Official translation
Saisyu: Ah yes, that's the power of kyokugen karate. Now, after living with my disgrace known, I can finally... Saishu: My fate was to lose. I'm impressed.
Rugal: Heheheheh! Even though I am your enemy, I must congratulate you on a job well done. But you cannot defeat me, not with the new power I have obtained! Uohhhhhhhh... Rugal: Heh, heh. You did well. Now you'll face evil's wrath! Woooooo.....

Sasuga kyokugen.

I struggled a lot with Saisyu's second sentence. Basically, he lived after having his disgrace (being kidnapped and brainwashed) exposed, and now he's been beaten...well, the Japanese doesn't say, but the implication would've been that he died (until the ending).

The English drops pretty much all of this. Instead Saisyu talks about how his fate was to lose for whatever reason, and that he's impressed with kyokugen anyhow. "I'm impressed" is a legitimate way to translate "sasuga", but it's kind of weird coming after "My fate was to lose." Then what are you impressed about?

Rugal's line heavily shortened. The biggest loss is dropping Rugal talking about his new power, which is the only time it gets mentioned on this route. His complimenting the AoF Team is also considerably cut down and loses a lot of flavor. I do like "Now you'll face evil's wrath!" though.

This loses two screen in English, one from each line.

Ending

My translation Official translation
Rugal: Gh, so even with this power, I still lost...! Rugal: Even with my new power, I lost.
Rugal ?!....What? My body is....! Rugal: What? My body.....?????
Rugal: Ridiculous...that this should happen to me....
Rugal: Heheh...very well. As long as this world has need of me, I shall surely rise again... Rugal: No...to meet such a fate! But I'll be back...you jerks!
Rugal: ...farewell....!
Robert: What the hell just happened? Robert: Just what is going on here?
Takuma: Most likely he was simply unable to withstand the power after it began to run wild. More than that, what about Saisyu? Takuma: Controlling such power just ate him up. Where's Kusanagi?
Ryo: Now that you mention it... Ryo: Yeah, where did he...
Takuma: Hm. Well, Saisyu wouldn't die from a thing like that. Takuma: Saishu? He couldn'tve died from that.
Takuma: Farewell, Saisyu...! Takuma: Take care, Saishu... Wherever you are.
Takuma: By the way, both of you. It's sudden, but I was thinking of retiring after this. Takuma: By the way, it's time I left you two.
Ryo: Huh? Ryo: What?
Robert: Wh-what are you talking about? Robert: Huh?
Takuma: I'm approaching my body's limits...it's only natural. Ryo, Robert....I'd like for you two to take over as my representatives! Takuma: I'm just too old for this. You guys take over for me at the gym.
Robert: M-Master! Robert: M-Master!
Takuma: Of course, I'll be running everything from behind the scenes. And I'll be sure to train you to your limits! Takuma: Of course, I'll have say in all decisions and train you two.
Ryo, Robert: Huh? Ryo, Robert: What?
Robert: But Master, that's just how it is now! There's no change! Robert: But Master, it's no different than before!
Takuma: Hm...that's true....! Well, that's all right then. Takuma: Oh yeah. Well, no matter.
Robert: I've got a bad feeling about this... R-Ryo! I think we'd better team up with Yuri next time! Robert: I got a bad feeling about this. Hey, let's team up with Yuri.
Ryo: Y-yeah... I agree! Ryo: Good idea.
Takuma: What are you two talking about? It's time to go home and start training! Takuma: What are you gabbing about. It's training time!
Ryo, Robert: Of course this would happen...boo hoo hoo.... Ryo, Robert: Ah, I thought so!

This doesn't really lose much meaning in the translation, but it's so cut down it loses a ton of flavor and comedic timing. The English comes across as much more rushed and sloppy by comparison.

I talked about Rugal exploding on the Hero Team's page.

Takuma's first line is a good example of things just being cut to the bone in the AoF Team's ending. It's three screens in Japanese, and the script has a chance to stretch out a bit. Meanwhile in English it's one screen and Takuma ends up sounding very blunt in comparison. Which isn't necessarily bad, but it is noticeable.

"Couldn'tve" is non-standard, but I think that one's just character limits. And then after that, Takuma's farewell to Saisyu is actually expanded in English! It's a nice touch.

There's also a mixup with the pictures in English vs Japanese. In Japanese, the camera switches to Ryo and Robert when Ryo says "Huh?", and switches back to Takuma only when he starts talking. In English, the camera switches on "By the way, it's time I left you two." and back for Ryo's "What?.

Luckily for the English version, it ends up feeling like the camera cuts to show Ryo and Robert's reactions to Takuma's retirement either way. I suspect some control codes got mixed up while screens were getting cut.

Ryo and Robert's crying is cut at the end, probably because it sounds pretty goofy in English. Everything else is just...viciously edited, but not in a way that's interesting to talk about.

Not counting the losses in Rugal's bit, this loses a massive six screens in English! Takuma's "Most likely" gets its own screen in Japanese, as well as "what about Saisyu?". His "I'll be running everything" explanation takes two screens in Japanese instead of just one, and his "Hm...that's true...!" is also on its own screen, which gives it a bit of pacing. Robert's "I've got a bad feeling about this" is on its own screen, and finally Takuma's "What are you two talking about?" is on its own. Man, that's a lot!

Train and become stronger! I'll train even harder and become stronger than that! Gee, you really need to work on your technique!
Fight and fight and keep fighting until you win! That's my code! Fight, fight fight. It's the only way to get tough!
There're no second chances in a real fight! Learn that well! No second chances, pal. Go home and wrap those wounds!

Training.

Ryo's future win quotes are set. He's not going to get to sass his opponents again until he breaks out the ultimate SNK insult in 98.

The English first quote feels like an expansion of the Japanese first sentence, but entirely drops the second. Which lets Ryo be a little rude in English, but not a lot.

The second quote is pretty close, though the English drops the idea that fighting a lot is Ryo's code (/conviction/ideal/belief/etc).

Then the third adds a bit of flavor in English, but is ultimately pretty similar.

Set Teams

Team My translation
Hero Team You cared too much about winning! That's when you lost!
AoF Team You got the outer apperance right, but there's nothing inside!
FF Team You're the perfect opponent! Let's do this again sometime!
Ikari Team Kyokugen karate has been forged through constant life and death struggles! It won't lose!
PS Team Kyokugen karate is stronger than every other martial art! Of course, that includes your kenpo!
Kim Team If you've still got some fight left in you, I'll be your opponent anytime!
Womens Team You get it now, right? So go wait quietly at home!
Rival Team You'll lose to us every time with that kind of attitude!

These are all pretty standard. Kyokugen is the strongest, focus on the fight, etc.

For the Women's Team quote, I translated the word as "get it", but it's kind of a "consent/understanding" thing. The idea is that Yuri should know her limits and go home already.

Then for the Rival Team, I said "attitude" but it's more like spirit/heart/etc. But "with that kind of spirit!" sounds weird in English, so I went with attitude. But Ryo is yelling at them about their lack of straightforward martial arts heroism.

For martial artists, as soon as you think "I've lost", you have! You're one of the strongest opponents yet. Not!!!
Since I have my own style of kyokugen, the ordinary counters won't work! You can't beat me with your one-pattern fighting, bonehead!
The difference in our abilities is obvious! You still want to fight? You're hopeless! What, again? C'mon, I'm just too tough for a wimp like you!

I had to guess on which one was which, but I think I'm right.

The first one is our 17th encounter with "...not!" Somehow, it feels like that number should be higher. It doesn't have much to do with the Japanese line, which is telling the opponent to keep fighting to the end. Let's positive thinking.

The second one is odd, because "one-pattern" looks like it should be a literal translation of the wasei-eigo phrase, but...it's not. It's not in the Japanese at all. It's not in any of Robert's Japanese lines and I have no idea where it came from. The "bonehead" feels like the touch of the editor, but a literal wasei-eigo doesn't sound like them at all. What happened here?

The third line does seem to be an actual translation of the Japanese line. And, honestly, it's pretty good! Everything's there, and it sounds natural in English. One out of three ain't bad?

Set Teams

Team My translation
Hero Team We won, but you did pretty well for yourselves!
AoF Team We're just that little bit better with kyokugen!
FF Team Hey, weren't you stronger last time? What a letdown!
Ikari Team You might call yourselves the strongest soldiers, but in reality...
PS Team You don't have enough stamina! If you don't improve that, you'll always fall down in the last act!
Kim Team Anyone could get that strong! You need to work harder!
Women Team You've got some power! See if you can win next time!
Rival Team You guys have quite the chip on your shoulder! Seeing the world through your skewed perspective couldn't be fun!

Kishi got the Rival Team quote.

Robert gets to make fun of a few people. At least the Fatal Fury Team and the Ikari Team. In general, he's got a bit more flavor than Ryo.

I'm not sure why he's calling out the Psycho Soldiers Team's stamina in particular, but there you go.

My translation Official translation
I'll say it as many times as it takes! Kyokugen karate is invincible! The way of kyokugen karate is invincible! Real tough!
An instant of foresight, and the battle is decided! Were you able to see my moves? Come again, slug. Just try to beat me. Nyah, nyah!
Don't let down your guard until the very, very end! That's your weakness, and why you cannot defeat me! Stop whining. Your face will heal--in a few years.

The first line drops that Takuma has said this before and will (inevitably) say it again, but adds a definition of "invincible" for any kids that didn't know, for some reason. I guess that's all right?

I struggled with how to phrase the second line, but he's getting at the idea that if you can foresee your opponent's moves, you can counter them and thus, win. Then he asks if the loser could see his moves at all. Anyway, the English drops all of this in favor of...uh, whatever that line is. (I'm not sure if it belongs with the second or the third, but it sounds slightly more related to the second) At least it sort of keeps the idea that Takuma is challenging his opponent.

The third line is more fighting advice in Japanese, with the idea that Takuma won because his opponent stopped at the finish line, for whatever reason. The English drops all that, replacing it with another "you'll get better...eventually" joke.

Team My translation
Hero Team You need a lot more training if this is all it takes to beat you! You're not worthy of the Kusanagi name!
AoF Team As long as you fail to grasp the essence of kyokugen, you'll never truly understand it!
FF Team It seems you've improved your skills, but that's why we can't let you win!
Ikari Team It is a privilege to fight you again! You have real talent! Come study kyokugen!
PS Team Seems like you need to temper your spirit! Then come challenge us again!
Kim Team Let out your power to the limit! If you can, that is!
Women Team Train yourself and become stronger! That's when you'll see victory!
Rival Team Challenge us as many times as you like, the result will be the same! You cannot defeat kyokugen!

Kishi got the Kim Team line.

Yeah, these all sound like Takuma.

Him trying to recruit the Ikari Team is pretty cute, though.

Kishi had to step in because I got sloppy and misread "limit, extremity" as referring to the kyokugen style...I'll pay more attention next time.
