Real Bout Fatal Fury Special

EX Andy

We're not done yet!

All pictures here were captured by Kishi. Thank you!

Ending

My translation Official translation
EX Andy: In the end, I am only a shadow. I shall withdraw here. EX Andy: I am a more shadow. Goodbye.
Andy: Wait! What do you mean, "a shadow"?! Andy: Wait! What do you mean!
EX Andy: The Shiranui hold both light and shadow. It's the natural order of things. EX Andy: Shiranuis are made of light and shadow.
Andy: You're saying that you are my shadow? Andy: And you're my shadow?!
Mai: Then, then, do I have one too?! Mai: Then I have one , too?! Cool!
EX Andy: .... EX Andy: Oooooh!

Well, there's a typo in the first line. It's probably supposed to be "mere". Overall, though, the line is just edited down to fit the character limits.

Then English Andy is missing a question mark, but again, the line is fine otherwise.

The next line is basically accurate. I first thought EX Andy was supposed to be a body double like 2P Geese, but it sounds more like he's Andy's incarnated dark side (?). Very Jungian. The English drops the part about having light and shadow being part of the natural order/a normal existence. That's what made me think he's more of Andy's dark side, since people containing light and shadow is normal...but I might be misinterpreting it. It's a vague line in both languages.

Andy's line is the same, Mai's is close to the same, but she doesn't say "Cool!" in Japanese. She sounds cute and bubbly like usual, but just from the text she could be excited, could be dismayed. I tried to get that across.

Japanese EX Andy is silent on the matter. English EX Andy is more vocal, and I think that's supposed to be a groan, not a shout. Either way, it was added in.

Win Quotes

vs Terry

My translation Official translation
It's an honor to fight a man like you. It was an honor crushing you ,twit!

Yep, that's the SNK we all know. Japanese EX Andy is polite, English EX Andy has an attitude. As was the style at the time.

Take out the blatantly added bits and it's fairly accurate, though.

vs Andy

My translation Official translation
Looks like you underestimated this shadow. I underestimated you , ninja!

Mistranslation here, it's the usual subject mixup. I'm not sure if the "ninja" in the English line is because someone just associated "shadow" so heavily with ninja, or if it was an edit afterwards to match the mistranslation.

vs Mai

My translation Official translation
There is only death for a defeated ninja! Defeat is death to a real ninja!

This really feels like the sort of line you'd hear in a movie or anime about the Sengoku period. It's a very stereotypical line for ninja.

vs Duck King

My translation Official translation
I'd like you to stop messing around. Don't joke with me , melonhead!

The Japanese isn't so insulting, but my translation could probably stand to be punched up a little bit. Anyway, this has a similar meaning, but the tone is wildly off. We've seen melonhead before - from Duck! That's cute.

vs Tung Fu Rue

My translation Official translation
I would've liked to fight you in your youth... Too bad you're so incredibly old!

Similar to the Duck line above, this is technically accurate, but so wildly off in tone it becomes misleading. The Japanese is wistful, the English is insulting. But still, EX Andy wishes Tung wasn't so old.

vs Sokaku

My translation Official translation
Mochizuki-style? It's nothing but a relic of the past. Mochizuki-style is all but a relic!

There's a bit of a nuance difference here. "All but a relic" implies that Mochizuki-style still has some relevance, but that's not what EX Andy is saying. He's saying that Mochizuki-style belongs in the dustbin of history. (I was very close to putting that phrase in my translation, but decided it was a bit too out there. Too bad.)

vs Billy

My translation Official translation
Flames are useless against me! Flames have no effect on me!

...yep.

I got nothing!

vs Geese

My translation Official translation
Your evil tyranny is nothing to fear! I will crush all worldly evil!

Kishi helped out on this one.

This is a weird line in Japanese, so I'm not surprised it got jumbled in the translation. Specifically, the phrase Kishi translated as "evil tyranny" is 悪の覇動/aku no hadou. Except it's not hadou like Hadouken (that's "wave motion", like in Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers), it's "leadership/domination motion". That's the literal reading of the kanji, since it's not a real word. So you can kind of see how they got "worldly evil" out of that.

Then the rest of the line is the kind of standard thing you hear out of heroes in anime about how something is nothing to fear/not worth fearing. It's a heroic boast, so that's probably where the "crushing" came in. Or it's standard SNK punching up, which I can also believe!

vs Krauser

My translation Official translation
A defeated Emperor...what a pitiable sight. A fall of emperor is always tragic!

That "A" should really be a "The" in the English line there.

Other than that...yeah.

vs Laurence

My translation Official translation
My speed was superior. You can't match my furious speed!

This is punched up a bit, but otherwise it's all there. The English version isn't nearly as wild as Tung or Duck's lines, it's just a bit more forceful.

vs the Jin brothers

My translation Official translation
Your dragon fighting spirit was incredible! Splendid. You're a fighting dragon!

I feel like the "dragon" here is referring to the spirits possessing the Jins which all have ___ Dragon names, as mentioned on Chonshu's Real Bout Fatal Fury page. Anyway, that sounds really weird even if you know the context, so I can see how someone rewrote it into "You're a fighting dragon!" which sounds like it makes more sense but loses the reference.

vs Yamazaki

My translation Official translation
Your madness...it isn't normal. You're no ordinary psycho!

This is another one where the translation is basically accurate, but the tone is so off it feels misleading. But yes, Yamazaki is no ordinary psycho. That's for sure.

vs Mary

My translation Official translation
Not bad, woman! You're quite good , and a real babe!

Heh.

Yeah, EX Andy isn't hitting on Mary here. He's being vaguely condescending instead.

vs EX Andy

My translation Official translation
You're supposed to be the same shadow as I? You're far too weak. For a ninja, you're too weak!

Here's the same shadow/ninja confusion as in the Andy line. The point isn't that 2P EX Andy is weak as a ninja, it's that he's weak as a shadow of Andy. It does seem like this substitution was intended, though, for whatever reason.

Kishi got these pictures by going into the Saturn version. Everyone thank.

vs others

My translation Official translation
I am a gale! No one can stop me. I'm a whirlwind. No one stops me!

Yep. The English line is a bit goofier, but I'll allow it.

There are some similarities to one of Mai's Fatal Fury 2 win quotes. Makes sense!
