What...
HAPPENED?
As a sequel to Samurai Shodown, Samurai Shodown 2 (True Samurai Spirits) is an improvement in every way. Graphics are prettier. New characters were added. New systems were added. The story picks up and gets even more elaborate. The stagehands get to speak.
But then, in English...
It's not that the editor had too much fun with SamSho2, it's that the editor doesn't seem to have been involved at all. The translations are just...well, bad. Ungrammatical, nonsensical, frequently made up...name a flaw, it's probably in there somewhere. It's a massive departure from even other SNK games that didn't have the touch of the editor - at least Fatal Fury 1 and King of Fighters 94 are more or less accurate. SamSho2 feels like the translator didn't know English. Looking at the game release schedules, the only game that could overlap with SamSho2 is KoF94, but again, the translation for that feels entirely different. (though both lack the editor. A really bad bout of the flu?) Did SNK just have Tanaka from accounting make the English version of a highly-anticipated sequel?
All of it is a massive departure from the rest of SNK's games of the period. Very strange.
